Amiralstaden Culture House, 2018, Term 9
Amiralstaden, Malmö

With its famous falafel kiosks and countless car repair shops, Amiralstaden bursts with activity. It has, historically, grown into becoming centrally located in the city as the city of Malmö expanded. Sandwiched between the important Amiralsgatan and Lönngatan, together with the notorious Norra Grängesbergsgatan, Amiralstaden sees a hefty amount of people transporting - through, and not into the area.

The latter road, Norra Grängesbergsgatan, has been a problem for the police in Malmö. It is the city’s most dangerous street where shootings and bombings happen periodically. Underground nightclubs and activity on the black market is a common trade in the corners of the street.

Amiralstaden have a wide range of programmes such as kindergartens, schools, dwellings (both houses and apartments), offices, shops, restaurants, culture institutions and more. What it doesn’t have is something to attract a wider range of people into the area. People are just using the big roads and straight paths through the area to get to the other side.

Could something change that and where does it have to be placed to make sense in this mixed place?
