HIGH 6, Office project, Tengbom, 2017
Kalmar, Sweden

A new way of building multi-family houses is how the research project High6, of which Tengbom is a part, can be summarized. Modular housing is not a new concept in itself; prefabricated houses have been produced in factories and sold as turnkey for a long time, but most taller buildings are designed and produced in other ways. This is now changing. The project makes it both more sustainable and easier to plan the construction of housing.

The premise of the project was to use Obos' existing factory and base it on the modular dimensions of 4 x 12 meters, so that the apartments could be mass-produced and transported to the location where they will be built. There will be 31 apartments, constructed of 64 units. The dominant material is wood, and it was important for the apartments to feel pleasant and inviting while utilizing technology to the fullest in the manufacturing process. In addition to housing, shared spaces such as a bike workshop, greenhouse, and a shared rooftop terrace will also be included.
